Things are getting sweeter at The Whimsy Cookie Company.

The Memphis-headquartered gourmet cookie shop, known for its secret sugar cookie recipe, is now adding coffee and caramels to its menu.

Whimsy partnered with Memphis-based J. Brooks Coffee Roasters to develop two roasts exclusive to the cookie company. In addition, the cookie franchise is partnering with Memphis-based Shotwell Candy Co. The collaborations are an effort to propel the Memphis brands across the United States.

“We wanted to help local businesses,” said John Kutac, Whimsy Cookie Company president. “We looked for entrepreneurs with the same level of pride in the products that Whimsy has.”

Both the new coffee blends and caramel collections will be available at the original Memphis location and all eight franchises across the South.

Whimsy will sell  its two blends by the cup and in 12-ounce ground coffee bags in stores and online.

The blends include Morning Whimsy, a light breakfast blend that has bright citrus notes in a velvety body; and Magic Roast, a medium bean with pleasant stonefruit notes and a smooth milk chocolate finish. Both blends consist of 100% specialty beans from Costa Rica and Peru.

“Whimsy Cookie Company reflects the best of Memphis — ingenuity and creative artisanship in their craft, displayed in a celebration of our Memphis community,” J. Brooks owner John Pitman said. “It is a great honor to supply select coffees for them and join forces in nurturing a love for Memphis and our excellent teams that keep the goodies coming.”

Shotwell Candy Co., known for its gourmet caramel and toffee candies, is packaging a selection of artisan caramels in 4-ounce (16-piece) boxes.

"I've long been an admirer and frequent customer of Whimsy Cookie and believe they not only have a great product but also a very similar approach to staying true to who they've been since the very beginning of their journey," Shotwell founder Jerrod Smith said. "I'm very excited for the opportunity to partner with another amazing Memphis brand and share our caramels with all of the Whimsy Cookie fans throughout the country."

Founded in 2006 and franchising since 2018, The Whimsy Cookie Company specializes in custom cookies. Started by one mom in her kitchen, Whimsy is now co-owned by founder Laurie Suriff and Collins Tuohy Smith, whose family was portrayed in the Hollywood blockbuster “The Blind Side.” Together, the duo has grown Whimsy from a one-woman operation to a franchise that includes eight locations across the South with 12 additional locations in development, in addition to the Memphis headquarters shop.

The Memphis-headquartered bakery serves specialty cookies including chocolate chip buttercream sandwiches, cookies stuffed with Oreo, decorated sugar cookies and eight flavors of Whimsy Gooey Butter Cookies.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to see all three of our local brands coming together during a crisis,” Kutac said. “Whimsy Cookie Company is thrilled we have been able to work together to bring all of our hometown Memphis-based brands forward in 2020.”
