NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville residents can now get their sugar fix at Crumbl Cookies, where the treats are mixed, rolled and baked in-house in an open kitchen and the cookies come as big as your hand. The locally owned chain cookie shop opened its doors Thursday at 2936 Showplace Dr.
Each week, Crumbl Cookies customers are greeted with a brand-new menu of six cookies. The rotating menu always features the shop's signature milk chocolate chip and a variation on a chilled sugar cookie. Depending on the day and season, the other cookies on the menu could include such mouthwatering flavors as churro, filled Biscoff lava, lemon glaze, birthday cake, candy corn, macadamia nut, pink velvet, sea salt toffee or circus animal cookie.
"Usually we are able to find something that appeals to everybody," said Peter Tennis, who co-owns the Naperville Crumbl Cookies store with his wife, Teresa.
Since the cookies are as big as a human hand, they're "built for sharing," Tennis added. Customers can even buy a special cookie cutter, so they can divide the baked behemoths into fourths or eighths and split them with their friends.
That sharing spirit is something that comes second-nature to Peter and Teresa Tennis and their five children. Tennis said they're always eager to "share the things that we love with others."
The family returned to the United States in July 2020 after spending more than a decade in Saudi Arabia, where Tennis worked as a business leadership consultant. Upon their return, they "came straight to Naperville," Tennis told Patch.
"There's just a feeling. There's a glow and a quality when it comes to Naperville," Tennis said of the family's decision to bring Crumbl Cookies to the city.
"We're so excited to open up, not just because of the cookies, but because of the people," Tennis added.
It's the high school and college aged people of the area who are helping Crumbl Cookies get off the ground in Naperville, Tennis said. He told Patch the Naperville Crumbl Cookies store received more than 100 job applications in just two weeks, many from teens and college students eager to join the team.
"Kids are motivated and excited to work with us," Tennis said.
When customers walk into the Naperville store, they'll be greeted by those friendly Crumbl crew members, along with the unmistakable aroma of freshly baked cookies. Via the open kitchen, customers can see Crumbl employees mixing fresh batches of cookies with raw ingredients, rolling dough, decorating cookies and serving up the piping hot treats.
Customers can also place their orders on self-serve kiosks throughout the store or order ahead on the Crumbl Cookies app. The app, which is available on Google Play and in the Apple Store, also unveils each week's cookie menu every Sunday night, so customers get a sneak peek of what's in store.
The Crumbl Cookies app also offers cookies for delivery, which Tennis said is his favorite task to undertake at Crumbl. "It's so priceless," Tennis said, of hearing kids scramble to answer the door for a cookie delivery.
He said, "The look of pleasant surprise on their faces is so awesome."
"Anytime people buy a cookie they are excited about it," Tennis said, adding that Crumbl Cookies is opening in Naperville during a particularly "exciting time."
"We're coming out of COVID. We want a new lease on life, a new outlook. And a new national chain showing up here that has a lot of pizzazz like Crumbl is just an extra treat for people to enjoy and share with each other."
Founded in 2017, Crumbl Cookies has more than 200 stores throughout over 30 states, including three locations in Illinois. A Crumbl Cookies opened in Schaumburg in spring 2021 and a third Illinois location opened Friday in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood.
