The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation teamed up with Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons to donate more than 1,500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the North Dakota BackPack Program in Bismarck, Jamestown and New England.
This partnership coordinates a community giveback program for the residents of the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The GSDH Council keeps cookie inventory available throughout the Cookie Program so the Girl Scouts have product in hand to run their cookie business. At the end of the program, there may be an excess of cookies and the council looks for ways to contribute back to the community.
“This presented another opportunity for our residents to support programs in the community,” said James Sayler, warden, North Dakota State Penitentiary. “Although incarcerated, many of our residents want to contribute what they can.”
Residents and staff at the Dakota Women’s Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, James River Correctional Center, Missouri River Correctional Center, and the North Dakota State Penitentiary purchased cookies which were donated to the ND BackPack Program. The BackPack Program helps place food into the hands of children on weekends when other resources are not available.
“We are honored that the DOCR chose to partner with us as a way to give back in their communities,” said Stacey Andernacht, communication manager for Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons.
