ORANGE — Twenty-year Orange resident Lisa Sargent hired carpenters and painters to renovate her space at 90 New Athol Road, paving the way for her to open Cookies and Dreams Bakery. Now that the business is up and running, she has a few helpers, all of whom are connected by a common life experience.

Sargent said everyone she enlists is, like her, in recovery from addiction. Sargent has been sober for four years and makes it a point to hire only women in recovery, saying there is a strong sense of camaraderie.

“We take care of each other,” Sargent explained. “That’s how it works.”

Sargent said she started renting the space (formerly Orange Graphix) in Hillcrest Plaza in December and spent a few months sprucing it up.

“It was just an empty shell at the time,” she said.

The Selectboard voted unanimously on March 10 to approve a common victualler license for Cookies and Dreams Bakery, giving Sargent the go-ahead she needed.

“I’ve been looking for a spot for a while. I just wanted to be a little country bakery, and I just managed to find the perfect spot here in Orange,” she said of the 90 New Athol Road location. “It was just time.”

The business sells homemade breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well as cookies, Danish pastries, gourmet cupcakes, specialty brownies and bread. Although Cookies and Dreams Bakery currently operates as a takeout-only facility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sargent said she has a two-year plan to expand her business next door with a gift shop and seating area.

Cookies and Dreams is open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 7 a.m. to noon on Sundays.

The company has a Facebook page, and Sargent said she plans to launch a website and online ordering within the next six months. For now, orders can be called in at 978-633-4035.
