In 1983, the Giants’ promotional slogan was “Hang in There!” The full slogan was “The Giants Hang in There!” but it was usually shortened for commercials and advertisements, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. The season before, the Giants were surprisingly competitive, battling the Dodgers and Braves down to the final week. They hung in there.
The Link LonkAt some point during that ’83 season, though, the slogan felt like an admission that the baseball wasn’t good. The spirit was willing, but the talent was weak. It was a bad baseball team, and now it was the fans who were expected to hang in there. On Aug. 7, 1983, Nolan Ryan came into town with the Astros and shut the Giants down with a complete-game three-hitter, which is about right.
Before that game, though, the first 20,000 fans who filed into Candlestick Park were handed a small cardboard box filled with baseball cards.
