Sunday, March 21, 2021For years Girl Scouts have relied on door knocking to sell cookies, but this year, many Girl Scouts had to adjust their business plan due to COVID-19.
“It’s a lot different because of COVID,” said Júlia Hidalgo-Salazar, who has been in girl scouts for 6 years. “I don’t want to risk it so I don’t want to go house to house. So I’m mostly just doing cookie booths.”
Those booths have been primarily outside local Cub Foods stores.
Brooklyn Park girl scout members say they’ve learned business skills including how to use social media to market.
“You can post yourself on Facebook or have your mom post. When people say like ‘hey I want girl scout cookies’ you can comment on the post,” explained Vivian Green, a five year girl scout member.
Together both Vivian and Júlia sold about 2,300 boxes of cookies this year. Each box of Girl Scout cookies costs $5 and of that purchase price, 76% stays with the Girl Scout or her troop. Some money also is reinvested in the regional council to fund leadership development programs or provide financial assistance.
The remainder of the money goes toward the baker and program logistics costs
The season wraps up April 2nd. If you don’t have your cookie fix just yet, you can also text COOKIES to 59618 or visit the “cookie finder” at GirlScoutsRV.org/Cookies.
Last year, girl scouts donated several boxes of cookies. See that story here.
