Somehow Tamika Heard finds a way to work the word “butteriffic” into every conversation. As an added bonus, there is always a big smile that accompanies that word when she utters it.
Anyone who knows Heard will think the name of her new café, Butteriffic Bakery & Café, could not be any more perfect.
Butteriffic Bakery & Café opens March 6 at 488 S. Second St. in the spot that was most recently Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies' Downtown location.
Heard describes her new café as a place built on “butteriffic love.”
She has been around the bakery business for two decades. Her parents are the founders of Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies. Heard, along with her sister, have worked in the family business for years.
When her parents decided not to renew the lease for their Downtown location, Heard, 43, jumped at the opportunity to create her own concept.
"I have learned a lot from watching my parents," she said. "Now it's time to show and prove to myself that I can operate my own location."

The new concept marries baked goods with coffee and a gathering spot.
“Cookies and coffee go well together,” said Heard, who has been busy testing recipes for the new bakery and café.
You "butter believe" cookies will be a big part of the menu. Heard is working on a selection of butter cookies in flavors like strawberry, lemon, chocolate and coconut.
But she is excited to bake more than just cookies. On opening day, expect treats like Double Chocolate Turtle Brownies and caramel apples. She will also be baking butter-cookie crust blueberry, apple and peach pies.
She is also working on vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free items.
The café will open with a selection of locally roasted coffees. Ugly Mug, Guji Mane, Memphis Grindhouse and The Bee Line will all be available as drip coffee. Heard said she hopes to add an espresso machine soon and is busy training to be a barista.

For those wishing for something a little more savory, she will have lunch offerings including items like Clay’s Smoked Tuna and Alex Farm’s Smoked Chicken Salad.
The new café will ultimately be a gathering space that will feature live music and spoken word readings. But for now, it will be a bakery and coffee shop that focuses on takeout with limited indoor seating.
Heard reached out for support to make her dream become a reality. Her GoFundMe page was key to helping her get the café open.
“The support has meant everything to me,” she said. “If we come together as a community, it makes things happen. They [her donors] made this happen.”
