Upon arriving at the Governor's Mansion, guests sat at tables set up with hand sanitizer, red and pink icing and sprinkles, and Valentine's-themed sugar cookies and boxes.
Eight Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs decorated Valentine's cookies Thursday at the Governor's Mansion with first lady Teresa Parson.
Erica Hansbrough, the pastry chef at the Governor's Mansion, conducted a cookie-decorating demonstration as Parson and guests followed along.
They started by outlining the cookies — shaped as hearts, X's and O's, arrows, and lips — with white icing. Then, they filled them in with red and pink icing and decorated them with red, pink, white and purple sprinkles, some in the shape of hearts and lips.
After their tasty masterpieces were complete, they put them in decorative red and pink Valentine's Day boxes with hearts on them to take home.
Parson learned how to decorate the cookies alongside the Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs.
"I had three brothers when I was growing up, and those three brothers ate a lot of cookies, so my mother didn't spend a lot of time decorating," she told the guests. "They were gone before I could do that."
This event was the first of a series of "make and take" classes where groups can come to the Governor's Mansion to create something.
"We haven't really decided on any particular things, but it will be stuff that we can work together on and then they take something home with them at the end of the day," she said.
Big Brothers Big Sisters Director Lee Knernschield said everyone was so excited to go to the Governor's Mansion and decorate cookies, and they appreciate the opportunity and the partnership they have with Parson.
"What a great opportunity — it's not every day that you get to go to the Governor's Mansion and decorate Valentine's cookies," she said. "I think it's wonderful and very, very thoughtful."
