Dine 909: Girl Scout Cookies are here, but getting them could be tricky - Press-Enterprise

Girl Scout Cookies — including a new flavor — are now available here in the Inland Empire.

But with current pandemic restrictions, just how available are they?

Well, as the Magic 8-Ball says: Reply hazy, try again.

Let’s start by introducing the new cookie: Toast-Yay!

It’s got the flavor of French toast, and appropriately enough, is toast-shaped.

It’s available from the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council, which covers most of the Inland Empire, as that council gets its cookies from ABC Bakers.

Little Brownie Bakers supplies the East Region of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, which covers the west end of the Inland Empire.

Little Brownie Bakers does not produce a version of the new Toast-Yay! cookie.

The new cookie joins the rest of the lineup: Caramel deLites/Samoas, Lemonades, Lemon-Ups, Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs, Do-si-dos/Peanut Butter Sandwich, Shortbread/Trefoils, Thanks-A-Lot, Thin Mints, Girl Scout S’mores, Caramel Chocolate Chip, and Toffee-tastic.

Again, how available are they?

That’s still a little nebulous.

With the lifting of the “stay-at-home” orders this week, I have the feeling you’ll be seeing Girl Scouts stationed outside grocery stores at some point this cookie season.

The scouts also have a deal to set up outside GNC stores when COVID-19 restrictions allow to do so safely.

However, it appears that, as of this writing, the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council has yet to set up a booth schedule.

There are other options.

One is to fill in a form on the council’s website (www.gssgc.org) and they will connect you with a cookie-selling troop.

Another is Grubhub. The online delivery service is partnering with the Girl Scouts this year to deliver cookies right to your home.

The Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council’s website says to check back on Feb. 1 for delivery.

And if you want to donate cookies to local healthcare workers, some enterprising scouts from Troop 3674 have created a website (troop3674cookiestore.wixsite.com/home) to do just that. (You can buy cookies for yourself, too!)

Shooby-dooby away

A few days ago, I got a report that the Ruby’s Diner in Cabazon had closed.

Sure enough, researching online, it appears that the location had indeed been shuttered.

Then I realized we got a double hit. The Palm Springs location had also closed.

The retro diner has disappeared from the Inland Empire and the Coachella Valley.

The closest location is now Anaheim. The chain has 14 Southern California locations — mainly in Orange County — and four in other states.

Thanks to friend and former co-worker Kristina for the heads-up on Ruby’s!

Two for $5

Inland Empire-based Baker’s Drive-Thru is offering a limited-time two-for-$5 deal on three menu items.

The items are egg burritos (available before 11 a.m.), combination burritos and single Baker burgers.

A vegetarian option is available for the combination burrito.

Celebrate brinner

I love brinner, and I didn’t even know it.

What is brinner? Breakfast for dinner.

You know who else likes brinner?

Firehouse Subs, that’s who.

The sandwich chain is celebrating National Brinner Week — Feb. 1-7 — with the launch of a breakfast-ized version of one of its most popular subs.

Available now and for a limited time, the Everything Hook & Ladder Sub contains the same ingredients as its regular Hook & Ladder Sub — smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, and Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and deli mustard — plus Philadelphia cream cheese.

It’s served on an everything bagel-seasoned sub roll.

For a limited time, any Firehouse sub can be made brinner-worthy by adding cream cheese and substituting the everything bagel-seasoned sub roll for an additional cost.

To kick off the celebration, Firehouse is offering its rewards members double points all day on Feb. 1.
