BATAVIA — Batavia First Methodist Church switched from a Cookie Walk to a Cookie Cruise as a fundraiser this year due to COVID-19 and the effort seemed to pay off Saturday, a church employee said.
First Methodist Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator Sandy Trimmer and her daughter, Emily, were bringing cookie orders to people who drove up to the church. The cost for a 1-pound box of cookies was $10.
The church asked the congregation to bake cookies, Sandy Trimmer said. The community could have either ordered boxes ahead of time or come to the church to buy them.
“We have lots of cookies. Our congregation was very generous,” she said. “All of the proceeds are going towards our church, just to keep us here and happy and healthy in the new year.”
Sandy Trimmer said planning for this event began in September or October.
“Normally, we do a Cookie Walk ... We’re hoping next year we can go back to that, but we didn’t want to disappoint anyone this year and not have any cookies for them,” she said.
The Cookie Cruise, which went from about 10 a.m. to noon, had a great turnout as of 10:30, Sandy Trimmer said.
“I’m really happy that it’s been so busy,” she said.
Sandy and Emily Trimmer said at least 200 cookies were made for Saturday’s fundraiser. Emily Trimmer said there were 30 to 50 different kinds of cookies. Aside from what was displayed outside, there were more in the building.
“It’s been one car after another. Everybody is in the Christmas spirit,” she said. “I feel like we’re helping them find a new way to celebrate this year and we tried to make it festive.”
The cookie choices included Buckeyes, Gingerbread Men, Cutouts and Mexican Wedding Cake cookies.
“Chocolate Chip (cookies) are always a really good favorite. Peanut Butter Blossoms — those were a hit this year,” Sandy Trimmer said. “We also made some Grinch cookies, which my daughter made, and she loves to bake, so we did a lot of that. Yesterday (Friday), it was just a whirlwind, getting our cookies all boxed up for today.”
