According to NASA, an asteroid dubbed 2018V1 will be zooming by our solar system today (November 2). While the asteroid has practically no chance of ever colliding with Earth, Oreo didn’t take any chances and built a doomsday vault to protect its famous recipe and cookies.
Oreo explains, “Although we were told asteroid 2018VP1 had virtually no chance of hitting earth, we couldn’t be sure. We built the Global OREO Vault into the permafrost of Svalbard, Norway with only one purpose: To make sure OREO cookies live on for generations to come.”
It all started with a single tweet in October asking who would save the Oreos following news about the incoming asteroid. Shortly thereafter, Oreo teamed up with architect Markus Thorland to build a vault down the road from the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Oreo released a five-minute video offering a behind-the-scenes look at the project and claims that the vault is “really real.” The brand even provided the following coordinates: 78° 08’ 58.1” N, 16° 01’ 59.7” E for those skeptical enough to track it down.
The boxes of Oreo cookies are stored in mylar which can withstand temperatures of -80 degrees to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and locks out moisture and air.
This bit of marketing genius is interesting as it is entertaining. We can all now sleep peacefully knowing that Oreo cookies are safe and sound.
