Frank French works on his feet all day at a full-time job baking, so what does he do when he comes home?

Well, this time of year he heads straight to his own kitchen where — for the 6th year in a row — French is firing up his home oven for his annual volunteer project called Cookies for Veterans.

“The first year I baked for Mercer County Veteran Services, approximately 24 boxes,” says French. “After the success of that event, I began to increase my numbers each year and went from baking for one organization to baking for a number of various organizations and individual veterans.”

French — who has a son active in the military who served three tours of duty, 2 in Afghanistan and 1 in Iraq— says, “After his second tour, I wanted to find a way to give back to the veterans, to say thanks. The idea of boxes of cookies was born from that thought process.”

The effort is growing thanks to social media. This year’s goal of 150 boxes was met and expanded to 200 boxes.

Donations to cover costs are accepted on the Facebook page of All or Muffin, the home-based bakery that French operates.

“A $10 donation gets a veteran a box of cookies,” says French. This year’s assortment includes chocolate chip, snickerdoodle and pumpkin white chocolate.

Boxes are shipped nationwide and delivered personally in the central New Jersey area. French has partnered with Heroic Gardens to extend his reach for personal deliveries to the Philadelphia metro area.

This year’s personal deliveries will be contactless. A box of cookies with a message of thanks will be attached.

“In past years we’ve greeted the veterans. We’ve shared smiles. We’ve shared stories. We’ve shared pictures,” says French.

But this year due to the coronavirus, there will only be porch deliveries — ring the bell, place the cookies, step back and wave from a safe distance.

“Next year we hope to greet our veterans the way they should be greeted,” he said.
