ANN ARBOR, MI -- A gourmet cookie business from Logan, Utah is expanding into Ann Arbor.
Crumbl Cookies is known for two flavors: chocolate chip and sugar. But each week, the cookie enthusiasts rotate four new flavors, offering at least six different options. Owner Kindall Palmer’s uncle started the business as a local venture three years ago in Utah, which quickly turned into a franchise, Palmer said.
“What started with one store turned into 150 in the last three years,” said Palmer, who runs the business with his brother Joey Cunningham.
The chain is doubling in the next year across the nation, five of which are planned for Southeastern Michigan, with the first at 215 N Maple Road in Ann Arbor.
“We love Ann Arbor. It’s a good food town. It’s kind of a microcosm away from Detroit,” Palmer said. “Our first cookie store started near a university. Our demographic tends to be the soccer mom so we positioned our store...where all the moms and their kids go. Ann Arbor is a good vibe. U of M is right there."
The 2,000-square-foot space is fully renovated and is expected to open on Thursday, Oct. 1. On Oct. 2, anyone who walks in can receive a free chocolate chip cookie, Palmer added.
The very first Crumbl store sold only chocolate chip cookies--which makes 50% of sales--and eventually sugar cookies, and offered late-night delivery, Palmer said. The company conducts “a big cookie testing day" to determine which flavors to launch on the menu each week.
“There’s about 150 of them right now,” Palmer said of the flavors they offer.
Crumbl Cookies also offers ice cream. The Ann Arbor store will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Delivery and catering options will be available.
“This is a gourmet cookie ... you can really eat one in one sitting. It’s about as big as my hand,” Palmer said.
