The next time you hear the word “phatty,” you might think of the oversized cookies sold at The Cookie Plug, the Victor Valley’s newest dessert shop that opened Thursday in Hesperia.
Serving original creations and classic cookies grandmas might make, the extra-thick cookies, or “phatties,” are baked daily at the store on the corner of Bear Valley Road and Cottonwood Avenue.
“We had a line that wrapped around the building before we opened our doors,” company spokeswoman Cassi Escamilla, 29, said as nearly two dozen masked customers waited to enter the small shop.
Escamilla said the “fabulous taste” of the nearly 1-inch thick cookies is what draws people to each of the company’s nine stores in Southern California.
“People also love the aesthetics of the place, the environment and experience people feel when walking in,” Escamilla said. “The urban street art-themed graffiti on the walls and the rap music playing is a vibe many people enjoy.”
The store also features large black-and-white police mug shots with a black text bar covering both eyes that reads “The Cookie Plug.”
The store offers 12 daily cookie flavors with names like SnooperDoodle (snickerdoodle), Crunch ‘N Munch (peanut butter), Wheat Roller (oatmeal) and The Mac Daddy (white chocolate chip macadamia nut).
The three keto flavors, KItt, Black Magic and Bart, pack anywhere from 8.1 to 12.8 grams of protein and are all under five grams of carbs.
“We sell our signature drink called Purple Drank, and we also have ice cream sandwiches called Iced Up Phatties,” Escamilla said. “The sandwiches are made by placing ice cream between two of your favorite cookies.”
Customer favorites are the “OG,” a traditional chocolate chip cookie and the cookies ‘n cream flavored “Cookie Cookie Cream,” she said.
Escamilla chuckled as she emphasized that the company’s cookies are not infused or associated with any old school original gangsters.
One Phatty is $4 and customers can purchase combinations of flavors such as the three cookie combo called a Dime Sack for $10. Meanwhile, a Half Sack of seven cookies will set you back $20 and a Fat Sack of 12 cookies costs $30.
Daily cookie specials called “Errday Hookups,” include Stack Em’ Up Sunday (two for one), Movin’ Weight Wednesday (six for $13), and Fat Sack Friday ($5 off a Fat Sack).
Mike Rand took advantage of the opening day special that included a dozen cookies, a Purple Drank and a bag of Cookie Plug stickers, all for $25.
“I waited in line for nearly 20 minutes for cookies that I’ve never tasted before,” said Rand, 37, who lives in Victorville. “After taking one bite, I can tell you that it was well worth the wait.”
Rand said while he waited in line, an employee of a nearby business asked him if the dessert shop was selling marijuana cookies.
“I assured her they were not marijuana cookies,” Randi said. “But I thought it was kind of funny.”
Rand said he found out online in August that the cookie shop was coming to Hesperia. After reading dozens of positive reviews, he decided he’d be there for opening day.
“I’m 6-foot 9, so I’m a big guy that likes to eat, but one cookie is so filling that I could barely finish it,” Rand said. “They’re a bit on the pricey side, but they are tasty and I’ll definitely be back.”
Store fliers suggest eating cookies within three to four days and freezing, not refrigerating, the sugary treats. Frozen cookies can be defrosted several ways, including leaving them out for four hours, placing them in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds or placing them in the oven at 350 degrees for four to five minutes.
The Cookie Plug is located at 14895 Bear Valley Road, Suite F, Hesperia. For more information, visit www.thecookieplug.com or @cookieplugcookies on Instagram.
