This time, it's Dewey's Lemon Bar Cookies - The Vicksburg Post - Vicksburg Post

Cookies are my favorite food. But never Oreos or Vanilla Wafers. They really have to be distinctly different and tongue-catching. So it’s with great pleasure that I announce to you my most recent and life-altering discovery of Dewey’s Lemon Bar Cookies, eight to a package — yes, you read that right — eight, just eight, but brilliantly packaged in bags to make you think there’s a lot more.

It’s all right, though, once you bite into that cookie, and especially if you like lemon. I promise you’ve never had a cookie this good.

And I discovered it at Walmart looking for Milano Orange/Chocolate, another that I never tire of.

But Dewey’s Lemon Bar Cookies take the cake.

I had never heard of them, but I’m addicted to lemon and they were so tempting. So I decided to try them. And I’ve never looked back. I haven’t bought any other kind.

After my first two packages, I went eagerly for more, but couldn’t find them again. The top shelves in the cookie section at Walmart were filled with Dewey varieties, but not one batch of “lemon-bar.” I went back twice in short order, but couldn’t find any. Once, though, I did manage to capture the last bag and have been going back ever since.

Couldn’t find them though. So I dispatched friends, whenever they were going to Walmart, to go to the cookie section and see. Never was lucky, though, until this past week when a friend, taking his mother to shop, found a five-bag shelf supply and got three of them for me. I was ecstatic.

I hadn’t waited for the gods to favor me. I had looked all over Google to see who else in Vicksburg was selling them and found out I could also get them at Big Lots and the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in the Outlets at Vicksburg. I hadn’t gotten to either place, though, when my friend found them at Walmart again.

I offered and urged him to try one. And finally, he did, both visibly and viscerally taken aback at just how good it was. This had been the reaction, too, of another friend who also had tried one earlier at my urging. Both could not be wrong.

To tell you the truth, I had never heard of Dewey’s and just happened upon it while shopping. But apparently, it’s been in Winston-Salem, N.C., for generations, and a favorite of generations there as well. I read on the bag that it was “Never Baked With: Preservatives, Artificial Flavors, Synthetic Colors, (or) High-Fructose Corn Syrup.” And I was sold. Genuine lemon is hard to fake, and artificial is hard to hide.

This cookie has both softness and crunch and is addictive immediately. But I limit myself to one a day, usually after lunch or an early dinner, and three bags will hold for three weeks. But a replacement supply must always be at the ready.

This is why I’m urging you to get some now, so demand is great and supply unending.

They really are that good!
